Exfoliation is an often-overlooked step of our skincare regime, yet it can have instant, visible results… and it’s so easy to do! Here at Savers, we never skip it, so we’ve put together this handy guide with everything you need to know about skin exfoliation, from what exfoliating is to its benefits and how to actually do it, while being kind to your skin!
What is exfoliating?
Exfoliation is the term used for the removal of dead, dull and dry skin cells from the top layer of our skin (also known as the epidermis), usually using a product with a gritty texture to buff them away or else using products enriched with exfoliant chemicals.
Our skin is naturally formulated to get rid of dead skin cells, with cells regenerating on average every 27 days. However, some factors such as age, poor diet, skin conditions, extreme temperatures and even wearing make up can impact the skin’s natural ability, meaning we need to give ourselves a little helping hand.
It’s a step many overlook but buffing away those dead skin cells has a positive impact on both health and beauty.
What does exfoliating do?
There are many benefits of skin exfoliation, but the main ones are:
Makes skin feel smoother and softer
Improves the appearance of dull, dry or flaky skin, giving you a youthful glow
Boosts circulation, which can make skin look younger and firmer
Makes products like moisturisers more effective as they can more easily penetrate the skin
Improves the application of make up and fake tan
Removes impurities like make up and dirt which can clog up pores and cause spots
How to exfoliate
Firstly, it depends on where you want to exfoliate. Exfoliating your face is very different from exfoliating your body, so it’s important to get it right.
How to exfoliate your face
The most important thing to keep in mind when exfoliating your face is to be gentle. There are a few ways to exfoliate your face, but some people choose an exfoliating scrub. Simply wet your face, apply the scrub and rub in small, circular motions and wash off with warm water. Normal, oily and combination skin will benefit the most from this type of exfoliation.
If you have dry, sensitive or combination skin, you can go down the chemical route when exfoliating your face, as scrubs and any other type of ‘mechanical’ exfoliation can lead to irritation and redness. Look for exfoliating products that contain AHAs or BHAs like glycolic and salicylic acid – these work by breaking apart the bonds on your face that hold dull skin cells and encourages your skin to naturally shed dead particles.
Whichever option you go for, make sure you moisturise after exfoliating! It’s also important to wear SPF as your skin is more susceptible to damage from the sun.

How often should you exfoliate your face?
Always follow the instructions on the specific product you use, as they vary depending on how strong they are. As a rule, exfoliating your face two-three times a week is recommended, but always listen to your skin. If any irritation occurs, reduce the number of times you exfoliate. Generally, chemical exfoliants can be used more than physical scrubs as they are less abrasive, but read the instructions and talk to a dermatologist if you’re unsure.
How to exfoliate your body
The easiest way to exfoliate your body is with an exfoliating brush, sponge or glove. The best time to do it is in the shower – simply lather with your usual shower gel and exfoliate gently. There are also body scrubs available that work similarly to face scrubs. Whichever you choose, pat yourself dry afterwards and don’t forget to moisturise!
If you want to get silky smooth feet, you can purchase special exfoliants that target the stubborn hard skin on the bottom of our feet that most of us find hard to budge. Finish with a foot mask and your feet will thank you, especially in the summer months!

How often should you exfoliate your body
As with your face, it depends on your skin type and which products you’re using. If you have dry and sensitive skin, start with two times a week and see how your skin feels. Oily skin may benefit from more frequent exfoliating.
Any other exfoliation tips?
Be careful if you suffer from sore, extra dry skin, eczema or other skin conditions. Exfoliation can be harsh on the skin, so start slowly.
Moisturise straight after exfoliation – it will penetrate the skin better!
Always exfoliate before fake tanning – ideally the day before you apply the tan – and again, moisturise afterwards.
Over-exfoliation can strip your skin of natural oils, so if you notice that your skin is becoming dry and/or sore, pause exfoliation and use a soothing moisturiser until you’re back to normal.
So there you have it – everything you need to know about exfoliation!
