During winter we can hide our feet in socks and boots and forget about them (we call it troll feet season). But when summertime comes around, cracked heels and chipped nail polish are so not a good look. Sandal season is here, and it’s time for some serious tootsie TLC. No need to splash out on an expensive pedi though, our expert tips will teach you how to get softer feet for summer at home!
How to get softer feet for summer
Step 1: Soak and soothe
Perform a spa treatment from the comfort of your own home. Fill a large bowl or bathtub with warm water and mix in a generous spoonful of bath salts with a few drops of your favourite essential oil. Soak your feet for around ten minutes. Relax, read a book, or catch up on your social media feed (a glass of bubbly is optional here!). This step softens your skin and cuticles ready for further treatment.

Step 2: Exfoliate and buff
Once you’ve patted your feet dry, you can use a pumice stone or nail file to gently rub off any dry spots or calluses. Next, use a foot or body scrub on your feet and ankles for a quick exfoliation to help get rid of any dead skin. After rinsing, it’s time to buff those bad boys up. An electric foot file makes removing hard skin effortless and is seriously satisfying. Focus on any hard and dry areas of your foot and be gentle – this shouldn’t cause any irritation or redness.

Step 3: Moisturise and massage
Your feet should be feeling pretty smooth by now. Time for some moisture! At this point, you may want to use a hydrating foot mask or foot peel. These are usually left on the feet for an allotted amount of time and are one of the best, healing treatments for cracked heels. If you’re using a moisturiser or foot cream, look out for ingredients like soothing aloe vera, and moisture-locking hyaluronic acid. Apply generously and take time massaging your feet, heels and in between your toes.

Step 4: Nourish your nails
Now your feet are as soft as a baby’s bottom, let’s attend to the nails. Make sure you’ve removed any old nail polish before trimming and filing your toenails to the desired shape. Apply cuticle oil or cream and gently push back your cuticles using a suitable tool. Apply a clear base coat to your toenails, before your fresh, new colour. It’s summer, so go bright! Finish with a top coat to extend the life of your new paint and prevent chipping. Slip on your sandals and enjoy that sun!
