Smart-looking beards require a lot of maintenance. If you can’t get to a barbershop at the moment, why not trim your beard at home instead? Your home-trimmed beard might not have that ‘barbershop’ finish, but with the right tools and techniques we think you can get close!
Make sure you buy some high-quality clippers and professional hairdressing scissors – and try to work over a sink to catch any stray hairs. Follow our simple guide to find out how to trim your beard at home…
You will need:
Razor
Electric clippers
Face towel
Moisturiser
Shaving foam
Comb
Scissors
Beard oil
Step 1: Wash and comb through (if you have a shorter stubble, skip ahead to Step 2)
Wash your beard with shampoo or soap (if it’s not washed, the strands can stick together and get stuck in the clippers). Once it’s completely dry, gently comb it, taking care to get rid of any tangles (which can also get stuck in the clippers) and ensure that all beard hairs are falling in the same direction.
Step 2: Trim the excess
Taking your electric clippers, adjust the trimmer head to the longest setting that you want (depending on your desired beard length) and gently run it over your whole beard. If you’re unsure how long you want it, start off longer – you can always trim it down if required. Don’t forget to go slowly (your barber might be a lot faster, but they do this for a living!).
If you have a longer, textured beard you might want to trim it manually instead, using a comb and scissors. Lift small sections of your beard between your fingers and trim to the length you want.
Step 3: Fade the neck (and cheeks)
Change the trimmer head to its shortest setting and fade the area over your neck and underneath your chin, starting from where your Adam’s apple begins, going up towards each ear. Splash your face with water to remove any loose pieces of stubble.
If you have a long beard, fade the cheek area too (along the section where your skin starts and your beard stops) to create a softer line and stop your beard from looking too ‘block-like’.
Step 4: Tidy up any stray hairs
If you have a short beard, apply shaving foam and use the razor to tidy up the edges and remove random bits of stubble – especially around the neck. For longer beards, take the scissors and snip off any flyaway hairs that are sticking out. Rinse with cold water and gently rub away the excess with a towel.
Step 5: Add some oil to finish
To keep longer beards looking smooth and conditioned, a touch of beard oil will help to tame and keep it in check. (You might want to use a comb as you apply it to make sure you coat every hair evenly.)
Then, sit back and admire your work!
