1. Light switches

Believe it or not, your light switches could be one of the dirtiest places in your entire home. While they might not look like they need your immediate attention, they are likely to be host to a build-up of bacteria and germs. But fear not, cleaning kitchen, bathroom and bedroom light switches will only add a few minutes to your cleaning routine.

To begin with, spritz a multipurpose cleaning spray into a microfibre cloth before wiping over your light switch multiple times. You can then wipe it dry with a clean polishing cloth for a sparkly result! For best results, aim to clean your light switches every 1-2 weeks to help keep the bacteria and germs at bay.

2. Showerhead

When you remove the plastic bag, you’ll then need to scrub your shower head with a rough cleaning pad or scrubbing brush to dislodge all the softened limescale. To ensure your shower head is fully clean, let your shower run for a few minutes for a final rinse. Trust us, this is one of those house cleaning tips you’ll wish you’d learnt sooner!

To give your shower head a spruce-up, we recommend using the distilled white vinegar method. The first step is to fill a heavy-duty plastic bag with distilled white vinegar and tie it around your shower head securely (ensuring it is fully submerged). Depending on how much build-up there is on your shower head, you can leave it anywhere from 30 minutes to overnight.

3. Hoover attachments

If your hoover isn’t cleaning kitchen crumbs or picking up pet hair quite like it used to, listen up! Rather than hunting for a replacement hoover, a spring clean of your hoover attachments could be all that’s needed to restore it to its former glory.

First, gather (or remove) your hoover attachments like nozzles and brushes, etc. For hoover heads with bristles, you may notice hair wrapped around the brush. While it’s tempting to rip it out, the best way to remove it is by cutting the hair with scissors and gently easing it out. Once the hair is fully dislodged, spray the brush with disinfectant to sanitise the bristles. The remaining nozzles can be soaked in hot, soapy water and used once dried. You can repeat this process after a few uses of your hoover to keep it in tip-top condition.

4. Above your door

The tops of door frames are likely to get the ‘out of sight, out of mind’ treatment; however, just because you can’t see them doesn’t mean they aren’t accumulating dust! With a step ladder and a feather duster, you’ll have all you need to swipe away the dust bunnies that have settled. As the tops of your door frames are not likely to get grubby or grimy, this is a great step to add to your yearly spring clean.

5. Rubbish bin

We get it, cleaning kitchen bins is not the most glamorous of tasks. However, rubbish bins are a breeding ground for bacteria and germs and require a thorough cleaning at least once a week. So, if your bin smells like last week’s lasagne, it’s probably time to take on this less-than-desirable duty.

Ideally outside or in a utility room, start by spraying a liberal amount of bleach cleaner spray all around the lid and inside of the bin before leaving for ten minutes. Once it has worked its magic, scrub the sides with a bristle brush or pad before wiping clean with a dry cloth. For an extra line of defence against funky fumes, we recommend sprinkling some odour-destroying powder into your bin to keep it smelling fresh until its next clean.
