By now, most of us know the long list of benefits that come with applying SPF. But even those who consider themselves sun savvy can fall short when it comes to applying suncream. So, if your SPF application method involves slathering on suncream and hoping for the best, then you’ve come to the right place! Discover exactly how to apply sunscreen on face and body, as well as tips on how to reapply sunscreen over makeup.
First things first, what suncream should you wear?
SPF (sun protection factor) measures the amount of protection you get from ultraviolet B rays. So, when it comes to choosing your SPF, the higher the rating, the better! We recommend opting for at least SPF 30, as well as choosing a broad-spectrum SPF because this will also protect you from ultraviolet A rays (the ones responsible for skin damage and premature ageing).
When it comes to applying suncream to the neck down, it’s recommended that you apply roughly a shot glass full of SPF to your body. While this may seem like a lot of product, there is a lot of surface area to cover!
To ensure that you get the best coverage possible (and avoid any patchiness or burns on missed areas), it helps to apply evenly sized dots of suncream all over the body parts that are going to be exposed to the sun and blend them in well. Oh, and don’t forget commonly missed areas like the tops of your hands and feet.

How to apply sunscreen on face
Suncream selection has come a long way in the last decade or so, meaning you don’t necessarily need to be using the same suncream on your face as you do your body. Nowadays, there’s a range of different formulations to suit different skin types, tones, and areas of the face. Hurrah!
Once you’ve got your desired facial SPF, you’re going to want to apply enough to fill a dessert spoon – this includes the ears and neck too. Be sure to put on your SPF around 20-30 after you have applied moisturiser, to give your skincare time to sink in. You can also go ahead and apply other facial products with SPF e.g. lip balms and scalp mists.
Good news – just because you’re wearing SPF doesn’t mean you have to skip out on your favourite makeup look. It just means that you will have to take extra care it comes to reapplication.
As well as your base layer of SPF that’s sitting underneath your makeup, you will also need to reapply your SPF at least every two hours – especially if you’re sweating lots or dipping in and out of the pool. But how does this work after you’ve spent time perfecting your base makeup?
Well, our advice is to avoid reapplying your suncream in a way that will drag or smear your makeup. Your best bet is to opt for a translucent face mist as this will finely disperse the suncream over your makeup without the need to rub it in. If you’ve not got a face mist in your SPF arsenal, you can still use a standard body suncream and dab it in gently using a makeup sponge or a damp beauty blender. Plus, the SPF will even enhance your glow, so no need to top up your highlighter!
