Your dishwasher tells you when it’s overdue for a clean. It might appear to stop working as well, leaving stubborn stains on your favourite plates. Or you could be greeted by an *ahem* foul stench every time you open the door. But, you shouldn’t wait for these red flags before giving your dishwasher some much-needed attention. Because if your dishwasher isn’t clean, how can it be expected to clean?
Cleaning a dishwasher
A dishwasher is built to cut down on cleaning time in the kitchen, so with that in mind, we’ve looked for easy and effortless ways for you to stay on top of dishwasher grime.
What to clean: Daily & weekly
Daily, try to remove chunks of leftover food, as this causes build-up (and that nasty odour we mentioned!). You can also prevent the amount of food entering your dishwasher – and ultimately clogging it up – by quickly rinsing or wiping off excess food from tableware, cutlery etc., before loading them up. Preventative measures are always best!
It’s often overlooked, but the inside of the door catches a lot of dirt. Using a wet, soapy sponge and microfibre cloth, wipe all sides of the door (including over the buttons and handle) to remove any residue or splashback. Don’t forget to pay attention to the rubber seal that runs around the interior, as it also catches flecks of food and grime.
Top tip: use an old toothbrush to gently scrape away any dirt for the hard-to-reach spots within the seal. Go easy on the cleaning products here, sticking to soap and water at most, as it can do more harm than good if you have high-tech features. Always check your user manual for tailored advice if you’re unsure what to use.
How to clean a dishwasher filter
It’s not the most glam job but cleaning your dishwasher filter is something that should go on the to-do list every week. If the filter is blocked by grime, your dishwasher won’t do its job properly.
To clean it, simply unlock it (check your user guide if you’re unsure where it is and how to remove it), rinse, and wash it in warm soapy water. Try using that trusty old toothbrush and a bit of elbow grease for anything caught up in the mesh.
What to clean: Monthly
To give your dishwasher a full MOT once a month, give it a super powerful spruce up by opting for a hard-working targeted treatment. In just one tablet and cleaning cycle, that foul-smelling bacteria and leftover detergent can be blasted away.
Or, if you want to try a more natural DIY method, you can clean it using white vinegar (our favourite multi-tasking kitchen cupboard staple!). Simply leave a mug filled with distilled white vinegar in the top compartment and run a high heat cycle without anything else in your dishwasher.
