How many of us put the fridge last on our list of house cleaning chores, simply because the door’s usually closed and we don’t have to look at the inside very often? So, it may come as no surprise that it is super important to clean your fridge to stop bacteria contaminating your food and making you ill and keep it smelling fresh. Here at Savers, we’ve got all the top tips you need to know on how to clean a fridge quickly and easily.
How to clean a fridge
Woohoo, you’ve set aside some time to do a deep clean of the inside of your fridge! First off, you’ll need to empty all of the contents, check use-by dates and bin anything that’s expired as you go. Next, it’s a good idea to wipe underneath any jars, packets, and bottles, especially if the shelf is sticky.
Take all the shelves and drawers out and use hot, soapy water to give them a good refresh. Next, rinse everything off and leave to air dry. Then return to the fridge and spray with a solution of distilled vinegar and water, focusing on any areas with dried-on spills and splashes.
As fridge door seals can quickly collect crumbs, tackle them with a stiff washing-up brush or old toothbrush. Finally, use drinking straws, cocktail sticks, or even a cotton bud to clean the drainage hole on the fridge’s back wall, which can often become blocked.

How to clean the fridge water dispenser
Don’t forget, your fridge water dispenser needs a little TLC too! Ideally, it should be cleaned at least once every two months to prevent dirt and germs from building up. To start, you’ll need to switch off the water supply connected to the dispenser and slide the water tube off.
Now it’s time to get out the vinegar! Place the tube above your fridge’s reservoir before pouring around four cups of distilled vinegar through it. You’ll need to tape the tube to your fridge’s wall so that it can drain into the water system. Then just keep running through the system until the smell of vinegar has completely gone. Pretty obvious, right? But your taste buds will undoubtedly thank us when you next pour yourself a drink!
How to get rid of smell in the fridge
So, you’ve emptied everything, cleaned the inside and got rid of any out-of-date food, but your fridge is still smelling a little off. Luckily, bicarbonate of soda will do the trick! Simply mix up a solution of 15ml (1tbsp) bicarbonate of soda to 1-litre warm water and give the shelves, door seals and walls a once-over with a soft, damp cloth. Got no time at all left to clean? Spreading ground coffee on a tray and leaving it in the fridge for a couple of days to soak up any bad smells works wonders too!
