One thing’s for sure – children’s uniforms are put through the wringer from Monday to Friday. Whether you’re contending with school dinner splattered shirts, scuffed shoes or bobbly jumpers, it can be a tough task keeping each item tip-top throughout term time. If this sounds familiar, you’re in luck! We’ve got all the hacks you need (from washing and ironing to stain removal and polishing) to keep those uniforms sparkling all year long!
Washing tips
For the best washing results, follow the instructions on the care label as this will let you know the ideal temperature and wash cycle for each item.
Avoid overloading your washing machine as this can limit the effectiveness of the wash and cause friction damage to clothing.
Use a more gentle wash cycle for items such as jumpers, cardigans, trousers and skirts to prevent colour fading.
Wash knitwear inside out to prevent bobbling.
For those wondering how to wash white shirts, your best bet is to wash them at a higher temperature than the rest of your uniform to keep the colour bright.
Separate your loads into lights and darks. If your washing load does include mixed colours, always add a colour catcher sheet to prevent any colours from bleeding.

Ironing tips
Again, check the care label for any ironing instructions – if you’re in luck, the item may not even need ironing!
Iron with scented ironing water for smooth, crisp uniform that will smell as good as it looks.
Ensure that you are continuously moving the iron over the item (leaving it in one place for too long could result in discolouration/holes).

Stain removal tips
Before putting stained items in the wash, make sure to pre-treat the area with a stain remover to prevent the mark from setting into the fabric. Here at Savers, we’re big fans of Vanish Oxi Action Stain Remover for banishing the toughest of stains.
If you need to know how to get pen ink out of clothes, try dabbing rubbing alcohol on the area before rinsing and washing as normal.
Also, if you’re wondering how to get oil out of clothes, you can use stain removers such as Vanish Oxi Action or apply baking soda to the area to absorb the oil.
Before you start polishing your shoes, you may need to tackle any surface-level mud or grime first. Usually, water and a scrubbing brush will work just fine.
If the inside of your shoes gets wet during this process, add scrunched-up newspaper into each shoe to absorb internal moisture.
Once the shoe is dry, you can start buffing in shoe polish using a polishing brush (if you’re wondering how to clean leather shoes, make sure to use a polished designed for leather only).
