Long days are standard practice for most people nowadays, wouldn’t you agree? With full-on days at work, hours spent running around after the kids, or even a weekend full of catch up with friends – life can feel pretty busy!
If this sounds all too familiar, you’ll need a makeup routine that can go the extra mile and keep you looking and feeling your very best for hours on end. So, to stop your expertly applied makeup slipping and sliding off your face by noon, try these top tips on how to make your makeup last all day long.
It all starts with skincare
Before you go anywhere near an eyeshadow palette or blending sponge, the first lesson in how to make your makeup last all day long is to prep the skin. First, cleanse your skin to remove any left-over makeup, dirt, or oily residue and follow with a gentle exfoliator to remove dry, flaky skin. Next, hydrate your skin with a moisturiser best suited to your skin type and follow up with your all-important SPF. Now, you fresh-faced beauty, you’re all set to move onto the next step!
Primed to perfection
A primer is a must-have for long-lasting makeup. There’s no if’s or buts about it! There are primers out there to help an array of makeup products stay in place, such as primers for the skin, eyes, lips, and even for your eyelashes. Basically, a primer is your very best friend if you want to extend the wear of your makeup and keep it looking fresh from morning ‘till night (and beyond!)

Be foundation savvy
When it comes to foundation, you’ll want a formula that will last as long as you do; there’s no time for cracking, flaking, or slipping off the face here! So, look out for a ‘long-lasting’ formula that boasts the benefits of being transfer, water, and even sweatproof. As well we being able to combat the clock, we advise you to look for a lightweight, oil-free formula as these will keep your skin looking radiant without clogging your pores or feeling overly heavy.
Top tip! Apply your foundation with a blending sponge and use a ‘bouncing’ motion on the skin. Don’t drag or swipe it across the face, as this moves the product around instead of layering it.

Setting powder = success
Now, whether you’re soaking up the sun or battling the wind and rain (either could appear at any time of the year here in the UK, right?), you’re going to want to give your makeup every chance it has to stay put – and the answer to that is setting powder! Not only does it help keep shine at bay, but it will help stop makeup from rubbing off and looking patchy. Apply with a big fluffy makeup brush to remove excess oil, but to keep your glow!

Set the tone right with setting spray
Once your makeup is in place, there’s only one thing left to do – set it with a setting spray. Now, you don’t want to douse your face and nor do you want to go in so lightly that it renders itself pointless! You need to find the sweet spot in the middle! Hold your spray bottle around 6 inches from your face and spray in an ‘X’ motion, leaving a light layer on the skin to keep your makeup protected. Do not touch your face until it is completely dry.
Top tip! Don’t have a setting spray in your kit? No worries! Hairspray is a brilliant substitute when used occasionally (remember it may contain alcohol, so we don’t advise you do this every day!). Spray the can into the air and walk through the mist, with your head tilted slightly back, to let the spray fall onto your face. Remember, though, to keep your eyes and mouth firmly closed if you do try this at home!
