Do you find packing a very stressful affair? Maybe you’re prone to throwing last minute items in your bag *just in case*? Or perhaps you’re no stranger to going over the baggage limit at the airport? If this sounds like you, you might be an over packer. But do not fear, with our handy tips, you’ll be a pro at packing light in no time!
Top tips on how to pack light
Whether you want to be a bit more minimalist with your packing list, or if you’re trying to fit everything you need into your hand luggage, you’ll love these money and space-saving tips.
Write a list
To sort your ‘must haves’ from your ‘nice to haves’, a good starting place is to write a list of all the essentials you’ll need. This way, you’ll be packing exactly what you need and are unlikely to forget anything important, like your passport or phone charger. Once you’ve packed all your essentials in and checked them off the list, you can then see how much room you’ve got left for not-so-essential- essentials (we’re looking at you, 4th pair of sunglasses).
Capsule wardrobe time
Although it’s tempting to bring the entire contents of your wardrobe with you, packing a capsule wardrobe is the best way to go! Here’s how to pack light when it comes to clothing:
Look at the activities you’ll be doing/the weather forecast, as this will help you plan what types of clothing/footwear you’ll need.
Pack a good amount of ‘basics’ like vest tops, shorts, and trousers that all pair well together. You can mix and match throughout your trip and will have lots of outfit combinations to choose from.
Be selective with footwear! Try to aim for one comfy pair, one smarter pair and one pair that suits the climate, e.g. flip flops for a beach holiday.
If you’re going to have access to laundry facilities whilst you’re away, you can pack even less items of clothing.
Instead of folding your items, roll them up! This will also help to prevent creases whilst also freeing up room in your bag.

Wear your heaviest items when you travel
The space in your case is precious, so you don’t want to be filling it up with bulky jumpers and trainers. The best plan of action is to travel to and from your destination in your heavier items, so you’ve got lots more room in your suitcase for other essentials.
Decant your toiletries
To save you lugging full bottles of shampoo and conditioner for a one-week holiday, decanting your toiletries into smaller, reusable travel-sized bottles will make a surprisingly big difference to the weight of your bag.
Even better if you can take any 2in1 toiletries or solid shampoo/ soap bars, as these are a lot more space efficient.
