When was the last time you cleaned your mattress? If it was somewhere around the 12th of never, then it’s time to pay a little more attention to your most-reliable sleep companion. Perfect for keeping the nasties at bay (you know, dust, allergens, bacteria) and helping you get a more restorative night’s sleep, a good mattress cleaning session might be just what your bed’s been dreaming of. Here’s how to wash a mattress like a pro.
How often should I be cleaning my mattress?
According to the National Sleep Foundation, you should schedule a reminder every 6 months to clean your mattress (and wash your sheets at least once a fortnight, but more on that later!). Not only is it in your health’s best interest to regularly blitz away dead skin cells, dust, and sweat, but cleaner mattresses make for longer-lasting mattresses too. It’s a win-win!
How to wash a mattress
Before you start, take a second to check the wash care instructions that came with your mattress. Not every mattress is made the same – some need flipping, others don’t. Some might come complete with a zipped, washable cover. And some are extra sensitive to things like stain removers and vacuum cleaners. You’ve been warned!
Step 1: Strip the bed & wash your bedding
Before we get to the mattress cleaning part, we need to start by taking off all your bedding. And while we’re here, let’s give them all a deep-clean too – yes, even the protectors on your pillowcases!

Step 2: Vacuum your mattress
Your mattress is a magnet for dust mites and dead skin cells, sometimes even crumbs from late-night snacks (no judgement!). Start by giving your mattress a good vacuum, using an upholstery attachment nozzle to really get in all the nooks and crannies.
Step 3: Sprinkle a deodoriser over your mattress
Either use a specialised mattress deodoriser or bicarbonate of soda, and sprinkle all over your mattress. Leave for at least an hour (the longer the better) for it to really work its magic. Next, vacuum all the debris, using your trusty attachment again, to get in all the seams and crevices – especially along the edges.

Step 4: Spot clean stubborn stains
Noticed any stains? Lift them using a carpet or upholstery stain remover. The trick is not to use too much stain remover and liquid, apply sparingly and use a clean, damp cloth to blot it out. Let it airdry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 5: Fresh up & protect
Now your mattress is all sparkling and clean, let’s keep it that way! Cover with a mattress protector. Don’t forget to add a spritz of your favourite fabric freshener for that extra special touch. Ahhhh, that’s better!

How to change bed sheets like a pro
While we’re on the topic of your mattress, here’s what you’re going to do with those bedsheets once they come out of the dryer.
Step 1: Start with your fitted sheet
The next layer to go over your mattress protector is a fitted sheet. Start by taking one corner at a time, before working along the edge to the nearest corner. Once you’ve hooked each corner on to the mattress, pull the sheet as far down as it goes to keep it place (and nice and neat!)
Step 2: Grab the corners
Get your fresh duvet cover and duvet. This part can get you in a bit of a tangle, but we’ve got a quick and easy tip. Turn your duvet cover inside out and grab the two farthest corners. With the cover still in your hands, take the two corners of the duvet, now shake until the duvet cover starts turning in on itself, covering the duvet. A couple more shakes or wave motions and your duvet covershould be on! Now secure and place on the bed.
Step 3: Add your pillows & final touches
Add your pillowcase covers to your pillows and arrange. Add an extra blanket or throw-pillows for a decorative or seasonal touch.
