Keeping and maintaining habits can be tricky, especially habits which are good for you. A trick to succeeding in sticking to your newfound ways is to incorporate them into an established daily routine. If you can stick to a regular routine, it could help set you up for success over time.
Creating a daily routine is easy, sticking to it is the difficult part! So, we’re here to help with tips on how to get into a routine and most importantly, stick to it!
Make a list of your daily activities
Before you can trial your new routine, you need to work out what you actually do on a daily basis. Start by writing down all the activities which you complete in a day; no activity is too small. Think about what you do in the morning such as brush your teeth, have breakfast, and get ready for work. Include daily exercise, business-as-usual tasks at work such as answering emails and don’t forget your night-time routine.
Set your daily structure
Armed with your list of daily activities, work out which tasks are most likely to be best performed in the morning, afternoon or evening. Think about what time of day you are most productive; sticking to a daily routine doesn’t just benefit your ability to stick to habits, it can also help you to become your absolute best self.
Mornings
Mornings are for getting yourself ready for the day, dealing with children and pets and essentially, getting out of the door. If you are an early bird and thrive in the mornings, reserve the earlier hours for tasks which require more critical thinking or tasks which you may struggle to concentrate on in the afternoon.
You could even include ‘wake up with the first alarm’ to your list so you’re up and about, ready to face the day from the moment your eyes open.
Afternoon
By midday you may find that the energy you felt in the morning has worn off (or at least the caffeine from your AM coffee has!). Use this time of day to complete things such as answering emails, running errands and household chores like washing clothes or hoovering.
Evenings
If you work a regular 9-5, the evening time is for you, your partner or your friends and family. Make sure you clock off work, plan in regular down time and maintain a healthy sleeping pattern. Also, remember to use this time to get ready for the next day – make your lunch, get your clothes out for the following day and maybe even check the weather forecast so there are no last minute tasks to complete the next morning.
Once you have planned out your daily activities, you’re ready to give it a test run!
Tips on maintaining a new habit
A small amount of discipline could lead to creating a new habit that requires minimal effort but gives you maximum results. So, if sticking to something isn’t your strong point – give these tips a go:
Stick to your new routine for at least 30 days; tweak things along the way which may not be working but you have to give it time to see how you feel and whether it will work for you.
Remember, consistency is key.
Start simple; don’t try and change your life in one day. Stick to your usual daily activities but give them some structure.
Be flexible and realistic; if you have a midday appointment, that’s fine – a daily routine can have the odd diversion.
Remind yourself regularly what you are trying to achieve. It may be to be more productive, to have more time for yourself or your family. What ever your reason, remind yourself of the benefits.
After a week or two your new routine should become ingrained in your mind and you’ll no longer need to refer to your checklist or schedule. Soon, you’ll find your days are running smoother and you’ll be thinking clearer!
