Experiencing ‘the change’? Well, first up – don’t worry, you’re not alone! And as you’ll probably have realised by now, it can come with a whole host of different menopause symptoms. But are there any menopause treatments? And what exactly is perimenopause? Here, we break downeverything you need to know…
What is menopause?
Put simply, the menopause is when lower hormone levels cause your periods to stop completely. According to the NHS, this usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, although it can happen earlier for some people.
The months(or years) before your period permanently stops when hormones begin to change and you start experiencing menopausal symptoms is called perimenopause.
What are the signs of menopause?
Not-so-fun fact: when your ovaries stop producing as many hormones, it can cause a variety of menopause symptoms! Common signs of menopause arehot flushes, night sweats, anxiety, mood swings, vaginal dryness, brain fog and headaches. Other tell-tale symptomsinclude poor energy, decreased sex drive and less muscle strength. Some may also experience heart palpitations, panic attacks, weight gain, joint pains, brittle nails, hair loss and allergic reactions.
It’s important to remember that the change in hormones can affect everyone differently. You may have many menopause symptoms, none at all, and they can even change over time.
Ways of managing menopause
Although these changes are totally natural,it can still feel pretty daunting. The good news is there are many menopausetreatments that can help with symptoms and give you a better quality of life. Phew!
Hormone replacement therapy
One of the more effective ways of managing menopause is withhormone replacement therapy (HRT). By replacing the hormones that are at a lower level, HRT can relieve most menopause symptoms. It’s best to speak to your GP and discuss the risks and benefits if you are interested in starting HRT.
Lifestyle changes
Making some changes to your lifestyle can also help you manage menopause symptoms.Eating a healthy diet, getting plenty of sleep and exercising regularly can all help with the signs of menopause. It’s also a good idea to stop smoking with aids like Nicorette gum, as well as cutting down on alcohol.
