Beauty trends come and go, but one that’s here to stay? Enter: the glass hair trend.
Promising smooth, shiny and oh-so swishable locks, this look has been sported by everyone from celebs on the red carpet to beauty influencers across their socials. And the best part is, you don’t need a 50-step routine to get glass hair, just a few nourishing products and trusty hair tools in your arsenal. So, if you want a shortcut to your shiniest strands yet, join us as we give you the hair trend 101, featuring a five-step guide and the products that’ll help you get the glow.
What is glass hair?
Glass hair refers to hair that is so sleek and shiny that it resembles a pane of glass (dreamy, right?). To achieve locks this luminous, the glass hair trend centres around hydrating, strengthening and protecting the hair before using styling tools to create the signature glass-like sheen.
Step-by-step glass hair routine
Step 1. Apply a hair mask
If your hair is looking and feeling a little, well, lifeless, it might be lacking in the moisture department – but that’s nothing a hair mask can’t fix. These strand-saving treatments are formulated with a higher concentration of nourishing ingredients than conditioners, to help soften and add shine to dry and damaged locks.
For best results, wet your hair until it is damp and rake a liberal amount of hair mask through your lengths and ends, avoiding the roots. Depending on the condition and length of your hair, leave your hair mask to work its magic for around 15-20 minutes before hopping in the shower and rinsing it away.
If styling products have built up in your hair since your last wash (dry shampoo fans, we’re looking at you), this can cause your hair to appear dull and weighed down. So, to create bouncy hair that’s full of body, double shampooing, and applying a nourishing conditioner after, will bring you one step closer to your glass hair goals.
When shampooing, use your fingertips to massage your scalp and dislodge excess oils and hair products before rinsing and shampooing a second time. Next, apply a generous amount of conditioner to your lengths and ends. Once you’ve left it to sit in your hair for the recommended time (usually 3-5 minutes), rinse it all out and wrap your hair in a microfibre towel.

Step 3. Blow dry your hair
Instead of blasting your hair on the highest heat for five minutes and calling it a day, the glass hair trend calls for a little more patience and precision. But before you pick up your hairdryer, ensure that your hair is knot-free and has dried (either naturally or within the microfibre towel) to about 50%. Also, don’t forget to apply a heat protectant from root to tip to help reduce any chances of heat damage.
Before you start, add the nozzle attachment to your dryer and grab a hairbrush – a round brush works best here! You can then section up the top portion of your hair and split the bottom section into four pieces. Take one of the pieces and pull it taut with a brush at the root. Next, focus the warm airflow on the bristles as you pull the brush through your hair, making sure the hairdryer is pointed downwards to smooth the hair cuticle and prevent frizz and flyaways. Continue this process on each section until all of your hair is dry.

Step 4. Straighten your hair
While your hair may already look glossy, straightening your hair will further flatten and seal the cuticles, making it easier for your hair to reflect light and appear glass-like.
Start by sectioning your hair in the same way as the previous step, then place a comb near your root and start to the glide it down your hair shaft, with your straighteners following right behind. Continue until every section is straight, smooth and shiny!
Note: for those with dry and damaged hair, you might want to skip this step to spare your hair from any further heat.

£6.49

Step 5. Apply hair oil, serum or leave-in conditioner
When using heat on your hair, it’s important to follow up with a hydrating product on the lengths and ends– e.g., a hair oil, serum or leave-in conditioner. These products help to lock in moisture, enhance shine, prevent breakage and tackle stubborn frizz.
