In December, it’s natural to start looking ahead to the new year. However, the pressure to ‘do’ or ‘be’ better when the clock strikes twelve can be a touch overwhelming, right? And after the year (or two) everyone has had, we think it’s time to ease up on focusing on what we should be doing in favour of things not to do! Think of it as an ‘anti-resolution’ list if you like! So here are some things to try not to do in the new year that will ultimately make your life easier in the long run.
I will not: say ‘yes’ to everything
Saying ‘no’ is one of the most important skills you can have, so why is it so difficult to do? The fact is, no one likes to cause someone disappointment, yet it’s impossible to please absolutely everyone! So, stop. Acknowledging that you can’t go to every birthday party, every playdate, every last-minute brunch with the girls will help you identify where to focus your energy. If constantly saying ‘yes’ (even when it puts you out) causes you stress or discomfort, this new year, learn more about saying ‘no, but thanks’ and who knows, it may lead to a happier, healthier you!
I will not: ignore my body
How often do you ignore aches and pains in your body? Or perhaps you’re feeling the effects of burning the candle at both ends? If so, your body is probably telling you about it, but we all know it’s easy to ignore when we’re busy. So in the new year, listen closely to what your body is telling you, whether it’s ‘call the doctor’, ‘take your supplements’, or ‘go to bed earlier’, and put your health and wellbeing first to eliminate the chance of burning out.
I will not: live my life online
Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Snapchat… the list goes on! There’s no denying we love to spend our fair share of time scrolling through and peering into the virtual lives of others, but to what benefit? Now, we’re not saying put down the phone for good (we love a good TikTok challenge as much as the next person), but definitely try to have more conversations IRL in the new year. You may be surprised how much you learn, what new connections you may make and who knows where it may lead?!
I will not: forget to make time for myself
So many people are so busy with work and home life that making time for yourself gets thrown to the wayside. However, carving out time to enjoy doing things that you love is SO important for caring for your mental and physical health. Making time for yourself isn’t a selfish act, so don’t let the guilt creep in! In fact, finding time to recharge your batteries means you will have more energy to give your best in every aspect of your life.
There are plenty of ways to take part in self-care, including journaling, going for a walk, taking a longer than usual bath, trying meditation, reading, starting a new hobby, taking a class, and even finishing work on time!
Whether it’s a daily activity, weekly or even monthly – this new year take time for you!
