The new year’s arrival means a new opportunity to set resolutions for many. Some give up alcohol, some swear off sugar, and others switch to a meat-free, plant-based diet. Otherwise known as going vegan.
If you’re thinking of trying out a vegan lifestyle this January, we’ve got some insider tips from someone who knows all too well about trying (and sticking to) a vegan diet. Jon, from our Savers marketing team, took on the Veganuary challenge two years ago and hasn’t looked back since.
So today, he’s sharing his top 5 Veganuary tips to help you on your way.
Jon’s Top Veganuary Tips
1: Follow vegan foodies
“Trust me, vegan food can still taste delicious! You just need to look at social media for inspiration. There are tons of successful food influencers out there who can help get you motivated and show you just how creative a plant-based diet can be. For example, BOSH.tv on Instagram posts new recipes regularly, which keeps your meals varied and exciting. You’ll be whipping up tasty recipes like the pros in no time.”
2: Try something new
“To make it as a vegan through January (and beyond!), you’ll need to be willing to leave your food comfort zone. Love milk? Then moving to alternatives might be a struggle at first, but you’ll soon love the taste of oat and soya milk just as much. With plenty of new recipes to try, you may even start to like ingredients you didn’t before. I used to hate mushrooms, and now I eat them all the time!”
3: Find a cheese rival
“Big fan of cheddar? Or maybe it’s mozzarella you think you can’t do without? Vegan cheese may have a bit of a bad rep, but there are some game-changing vegan cheeses out there that are not far off the real deal, so you don’t have to feel like you are missing out!”
4: Do it as a team
“Finding someone to do Veganuary with is a great way to help you stay on track.Me and my wife went vegan together, and two years later, we’re still following a plant-based diet! It’s helped that, as a household, we made that decision together. It’s also fun to get friends and family to go on the journey with you, as you can help each other and share foods you’ve discovered. Jackfruit, anyone?”
5: Re-start your resolution
“Don’t worry if you fall off the wagon! It’s no secret that plenty of people start off feeling seriously motivated, only to slip up later in the month. But whichever reason you went vegan for, giving it a shot is brilliant. If you don’t have as successful Veganuary as you’d hoped, you’ve found some awesome new recipes or even new beauty products as a result! Plus, going vegan for just one day a week can still have a massive impact.”
Veganuary can go beyond food…
As Jon mentioned, a vegan lifestyle can go beyond your diet if you’d like it to. Believe it or not, products like shampoo and household goods can contain animal ingredients. If you want to go 100% vegan, you may have to switch out a few of your home and beauty essentials. But fear not, there are more and more vegan brands emerging, and you can get them from Savers! We asked Jon for some of his favourites and we’ve added them below – why not get started now?!
